What is GIS?

  In the most simple terms, a Geographic Information System is a system of digital files developed to correlate spatial and tabular information for further analysis.

Tabular Information:
database files (.dbf), spreadsheets, export files of many database software programs, or direct connect to databases

Spatial Information:
aerial photos, quad maps, AutoCAD drawing files (.dwg), .DXF files, ArcInfo export files (.E00), shapefiles

Maps the tabular information on the spatial information for visualization and analysis.
